Official Stance On Fraternity House • Property Purchase
The issue of the fraternity purchasing a house for the actives has been a topic of discussion for many years. The benefits would be many. However, the reality of the large expense of such a project is a huge obstacle.

Shortly after the Sigma Phi Sigma Alumni Association was reorganized in 1992, the newly formed board of directors conducted a feasibility study, chaired by Dr. Richard Spenser, on a possible house purchase project. The report outlined all the expenses of purchasing a house, insurance, liability, upkeep, taxes, etc. It soon became clear for a small fraternity like ours purchasing a house is not a realistic project at this time. Perhaps in the future when the alumni association has established a large trust fund, endowment, or a financially secure situation, this project could be revisited. Purchasing a house could be a long-term goal. But only with the financial support of the alumni would the board vote to do so.

It was decided the best way to have a fraternity house to call our own, would be for alumni brothers to privately invest in a purchase of property and rent it to the actives with some help from the alumni association.

This decision was shared at the 35-year reunion meeting. To date no alumni has come forward to take on such a project.
